Should I buy a gas or diesel
powered generator?
If you are considering purchasing a generator for power outages
at your business or residence. There are some things you should
consider before making your purchase.
1. Longevity
Gasoline powered generators have an engine life that is measured
in 100's of hours.
Diesel generators measure their engine life in 1000's of hours.
2. Maintenance
Gasoline has a shelf life of approximately six months. If you leave
gasoline in your generator for three months or more you will probably
have to have the carburetor rebuilt due to gumming and shellacking
caused by chemical additives in the gasoline.
Diesel fuel can last from 12 months to 3 years without breakdown
by adding preservative additives.
3. Cost to Operate
Diesel generators use about half as much fuel as the equivalent
gas powered generators. Saving you money on fuel costs.
Diesel generator fuel can usually be purchased for 40-50¢
a gallon (off road diesel without taxs) 0r home heating oil can
be used also). Compare to gasoline at $1.10 to $1.40 a gallon.
4. Safety
Storing gasoline is extremely dangerous and in most cities and
counties it is illegal. Most people storing Fuel for generators
store from 50-100 gallons of fuel in their garage or shed. Gasoline
is extremely flammable, and under pressure 1 gallon of gasoline
is the same a s a stick of dynamite. Do you really want to live
that close to such a highly volatile substance?
In addition, if you are using your generator to heat and provide
power to your house, gasoline generators will run out of fuel during
the night. At about 3am, someone will need to go outside in the
cold with a flashlight and pour more gasoline into a very hot generator.
Any spill has the potential to be ignited by the hot exhaust, or
the spark plug when starting the generator back up. This is an extremely
dangerous situation that could also ignite the surrounding area,
the home, even the person operating the generator.
Because of diesel generators low fuel consumption and use of a
direct spray injector system instead of ignition, the potential
for a serious mishap is greatly reduced.
Gasoline generators are made primarily for use in construction
where someone is nearby to watch and maintain the generator in case
of malfunction.
